Welcome to the Wonderful World of Produce!
Quality. Freshness. Variety. When it comes to your produce - and your family - what else is there? What else matters? The greenest greens. The sweetest treats. The thumpiest thump of the freshest Honeydew you've ever thumped. Quality. Freshness. Variety. A Produce department featuring all sorts of colorful, helpful displays and more than a thousand items from growers around the world and, more importantly, right here at home. Quality. Freshness. Variety. Period.
And then there's the many "exclusive" items that can be found only in Shaw's or Star Market. One that we're really excited about is Shaw's Ripe-'N-Ready stone fruit. A ripening process used by a small group of growers, Ripe-'N-Ready has increased the taste, quality and availability of Peaches, Plums and Nectarines. The process starts with special varieties and a ripening process perfected by temperature and humidity levels controlled immediately after harvesting. The fruit is then cooled prior to shipping, resulting in consistently sweeter, juicier, ready-to-eat heaven.
In the late summer months, watch for our New England Grown Program, a network of 63 farmers all across New England bringing the freshest and tastiest locally grown fruits and vegetables directly to your neighborhood store. It's quicker. It's fresher. There's less damage. And what's more, it costs less! This program also benefits local farmers, who receive an excellent, steady price for their crops. We started the New England Grown Program in 1995, selling only one item, corn. Today, we offer more than 70 different New England-grown produce items.
We're also thrilled about our Organic Fruits and Vegetables. Over the last few years, this category has tripled in growth and today, we offer well over a hundred organic produce items. These crops cannot be grown in soil that has been treated with any type of pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers within the last three consecutive growing years, nor can they be altered through artificial means. We're committed to the continued growth of this important category. And wait until you try some. Yes, you might even find that organic fruits and vegetables actually taste better.
