Carpet Picnic

We came up with this idea last year when the winter was so brutal, if you stepped outside your eyeballs would freeze. No joke. I’m a big nature person – by getting outside among living things I feel alive, so being stuck inside for days at a time takes a major toll on my spirits. So…when you’ve got cabin fever and are ready to go crazy, you come up with things like carpet picnics!  Carpet Picnics (which, I probably did more for myself than for my kids, haha) were our way of bringing the sunshine inside.

How we did it: set up a picnic table cloth on the floor in the family room, then put any kind of picnic lunch items in a basket, carry them in and unload (this is an important part of the fun).

*  What makes these special is finding an unusual way to do everything. If you don’t have a picnic basket, use a laundry basket. We do drinks in mason jars with plastic wrap (for no splashing:), straws, and a ribbon tied around the top.

*  No need to spend extra money! Use the food you would have had for lunch, just packaged in a special way. I love to put out a bunch of grapes, sliced apples with peanut butter, toasted cheese and ham sandwiches, etc.Carpet Picnic

*  We will often put our lunch out on a wooden cutting board, and just all munch and grab food together; no individual plates needed. It’s about sharing!

Carpet Picnic

* Technology not invited. No TV or phone allowed!

Sometimes our carpet picnics will have a theme: here we pretended we were in a pumpkin patch (my 5 year old daughter captured every pumpkin in the house and set it around us); sometimes we are in an apple orchard, and apples are placed high and low for picking. Keep the discussion to things you’re “pretending” to see. Imaginations run wild when you have young kids!

Think creatively around using what you have. It’s all about the memory!

When I used to care for children, I found it difficult to get them to eat vegetables. I designated Fridays as Mexican meal days. Be it nachos, tacos, or burritos, I cut up all the vegetables and put them in bowls. I let them make their own “whatever” and put it in the oven. I made sure we ate in the kitchen, since it didn’t have carpet & the floor was easy to sweep & mop. They actually looked forward to it in their routine & at least one day a week, I didn’t have to bribe or beg them to eat a few veggies. 🙂
